November

November here in Minnesota and Wisconsin is normally a wet, bleak and dreary month foreshadowing the coming of winter. The term “Novermberish” literally means “dreary.” And for all of my considerable years spent on this planet November usually turns out to be a cold, damp, cloudy and dreary month almost making you beg for the bitter winter days of January with their sunny skies and white snow.

The past few days have been typical November days. Cloudy, cold and windy days with a hint of dampness to push us on the slow march to the winter solstice and the shortest day of the year. But this year November did not begin in typical fashion. We spent three days up at the lake in early November and were given three of the most beautiful, warm and sunny days I can ever remember for this normally bleak month.

But even though the sun was shining, there was still a hint of crispness to the air… a signal for what is to come, what always comes in November. That is what I was thinking of as I was enjoying the warm evening as the sun was setting in the early November sky, knowing this was just a final tease before the cold winter ahead.
