It’s about the print…

17×38 inch Artist Proof of Dawn Mist, Big Spring Falls (C23-0015)

I have written elsewhere on this website that “I do not consider a work complete until the image has been transferred to paper…,” and the image above is an example of that mantra.

I have always loved this image, which you can tell by the description of it in my online store here. “The backlit fog, red sandstone and luminous water flowing over the stepped ledges of the falls is almost magical.” The “magic,” only hinted at when viewing the image on a computer screen, really comes alive in a large print.

I recently acquired a roll of my favorite paper, Red River Palo Duro Etching, which has a slight texture similar to a watercolor paper. I normally purchase my printing paper in sheets of various sizes; however, this roll of paper was purchased to produce prints of panorama and wide format images and my studio printer just so happens to be able to print on paper up to ten feet in length — not that I am planning any prints that large.

The image area of the print above is approximately 14 inches tall by 34 inches wide, while the paper is 17 by 38 inches. I have printed smaller proofs of this image, but those proofs just do not do this image justice.

There is nothing like holding a print of one of your images in your hands. It kind of reminds me of the first time I put a black-and-white negative in an enlarger, exposed a sheet of photo paper and then watched the image appear in the tray of developer.

It’s about the print…

And if I’m candid, the main purpose of this website is to sell prints of my work.
